Overview
Abundance — 雷火丰 (Feng) — fullness.
The Hexagram
- Upper Trigram: Zhen Thunder
- Lower Trigram: Li Fire
- Chinese Name: 雷火丰 (Feng)
- English Name: Abundance
- Key Meanings: Fullness. Thunder and fire — peak abundance, the king at high noon.
The Judgment (Guà Cí)
Abundance has success. The king attains abundance. Be not sad. Be like the sun at midday.
The Image (Xiàng Cí)
Both thunder and lightning come: the image of Abundance. Thus the superior man decides lawsuits and carries out punishments.
Symbolism Deep Dive
Thunder over Fire. Thunder (Zhen, movement, arousal) and Fire (Li, illumination, the sun) together: lightning illuminates, thunder roars, the storm of energy at its peak. This is abundance (丰, fēng) — the moment of maximum brightness and power. But the hexagram carries an urgent warning: the sun at midday is also the moment before decline. ‘Be not sad’ — enjoy the peak without mourning its inevitable passing. The superior man ‘decides lawsuits and carries out punishments’ — the energy of abundance must be channeled into decisive action, not hoarded.
Modern Application
Feng describes peak moments: the career high, the creative breakthrough, the period when everything flows. The I Ching’s wisdom is characteristically unsentimental: the peak is real, enjoy it, but do not cling. The sun at midday is true for exactly one moment; then it begins its descent. Abundance that is recognized and shared becomes wisdom. Abundance that is hoarded breeds anxiety about its loss. Modern application: when you hit a peak, use the energy for decisive action. Clear the backlog. Resolve the pending conflict. The abundance is fuel, not a destination.
