Overview
Return — 地雷复 (Fu) — renewal.
The Hexagram
- Upper Trigram: Kun Earth
- Lower Trigram: Zhen Thunder
- Chinese Name: 地雷复 (Fu)
- English Name: Return
- Key Meanings: Renewal. Thunder within the earth — the light returns, winter solstice, new beginnings.
The Judgment (Guà Cí)
Return. Success. Going out and coming in without error. Friends come without blame.
The Image (Xiàng Cí)
Thunder within the earth: the image of the Turning Point. Thus the kings of antiquity closed the passes at the time of solstice.
Symbolism Deep Dive
Earth over Thunder. Earth (Kun, winter, stillness, death) above; Thunder (Zhen, arousal, movement, life) below. Thunder is buried in the earth — but it is there. A single yang line at the bottom of the hexagram: the first spark of returning light after total darkness. This is the winter solstice image. The ancient kings ‘closed the passes’ — they understood that renewal needs protection in its earliest phase. The first yang line is fragile. It needs rest, not immediate action.
Modern Application
Fu is the hexagram of recovery: from illness, from burnout, from failure, from loss. The single yang line at the bottom is hope — real but fragile. The counsel: when you sense the first stirring of returning energy, protect it. Do not immediately rush back to full activity. The winter solstice is followed by weeks of increasing light, not instant summer. Modern application: after burnout, return gradually. After a failed project, let the lessons settle before launching the next. After a relationship ends, let the yang line strengthen before seeking new connection.
