Overview
Breakthrough — 泽天夬 (Guai) — decisive resolution.
The Hexagram
- Upper Trigram: Dui Lake
- Lower Trigram: Qian Heaven
- Chinese Name: 泽天夬 (Guai)
- English Name: Breakthrough
- Key Meanings: Decisive resolution. Lake above heaven — cutting the knot, the final separation.
The Judgment (Guà Cí)
Breakthrough. One must resolutely make the matter known at the court of the king. It must be announced truthfully. Danger.
The Image (Xiàng Cí)
The lake has risen up to heaven: the image of Breakthrough. Thus the superior man dispenses riches downward and refrains from resting on his virtue.
Symbolism Deep Dive
Lake over Heaven. Lake (Dui, joy, openness, water) has risen to the level of Heaven (Qian, the creative, authority). Five yang lines surge upward against a single yin line at the top — the final obstacle to pure yang. This is breakthrough — the decisive moment when a long struggle reaches resolution. But the hexagram warns: the single yin line is stubborn. Resolution must be made ‘at the court of the king’ — publicly, officially, through proper channels — and ‘announced truthfully.’ Covert elimination backfires.
Modern Application
Guai describes the endgame of any long struggle: the final conversation in a deteriorating relationship, the last push to ship a product, the vote that decides an election. The counsel is specific: 1) Make it public (no behind-the-scenes maneuvering). 2) Be truthful (no false justification). 3) Acknowledge the danger (the yin line has power even at the top). 4) After breakthrough, ‘dispense riches downward’ — reward those who supported the struggle. ‘Refrain from resting on virtue’ — don’t congratulate yourself too long. Breakthrough is a moment; the next phase begins immediately.
