Overview
Following — 泽雷随 (Sui) — adaptability.
The Hexagram
- Upper Trigram: Dui Lake
- Lower Trigram: Zhen Thunder
- Chinese Name: 泽雷随 (Sui)
- English Name: Following
- Key Meanings: Adaptability. Lake above thunder — going with the flow, following nature’s course.
The Judgment (Guà Cí)
Following has supreme success. Perseverance furthers. No blame.
The Image (Xiàng Cí)
Thunder in the middle of the lake: the image of Following. Thus the superior man at nightfall goes indoors for rest and recuperation.
Symbolism Deep Dive
Lake over Thunder. Lake (Dui, joy, openness) above; Thunder (Zhen, movement, arousal) below. The lake receives the thunder’s energy and settles into stillness. This is Following — not passive compliance but active alignment with natural rhythms. The Image is beautiful in its simplicity: at nightfall, the superior person rests. Following the cycle of day and night is the most fundamental act of ‘following’ — and the one modern people most often violate.
Modern Application
Sui addresses a central tension in modern life: when to push and when to yield. The hexagram does not valorize either extreme. Following is not weakness when the direction is right; leading is not strength when the direction is wrong. Practical application: in fast-changing industries, adaptability beats rigid strategy. In relationships, knowing when to follow your partner’s lead strengthens the bond. The superior person follows the Dao, not ego.
