Hexagram 10: Treading

Overview

Treading — 天泽履 (Lü) — Careful conduct, walking the proper path — heaven above the lake, the superior person treads with awareness, knowing danger lies beneath beauty.

The Hexagram

  • Upper Trigram: Qian ☰ (Heaven / Creative)
  • Lower Trigram: Dui ☱ (Lake / Joyous)
  • Chinese Name: 天泽履 ()
  • English Name: Treading
  • Key Meanings: Careful conduct, walking the proper path — heaven above the lake, the superior person treads with awareness, knowing danger lies beneath beauty.

The Judgment (Guà Cí)

Treading. Treading upon the tail of the tiger. It does not bite the man. Success.

The Image (Xiàng Cí)

Heaven above, the lake below: the image of Treading. Thus the superior man discriminates between high and low, and thereby fortifies the thinking of the people.

Symbolism Deep Dive

Heaven above, Lake below. Qian ☰ is the highest — heaven, the king, pure yang, ultimate authority. Dui ☱ is the lowest — the lake, joy, the youngest daughter, openness. This vertical relationship is inherently dangerous: the weak walks beneath the strong; the joyful (lake) approaches the stern (heaven). But the hexagram promises success: the tiger does not bite. Why? Because Dui’s nature is joy and openness — the lake mirrors heaven without threatening it. The correct conduct (履 lǚ, literally ‘shoe’ or ’to tread’) is deference without servility, respect without fear. The one who treads the path correctly moves between the powerful and the powerless without being crushed.

Modern Application

Lü is the hexagram of navigating hierarchies. Every organization has them: the new employee before the CEO, the junior partner before the senior, the artist before the critic. The question is how to maintain honesty and joy (Dui’s nature) while respecting the structure of power (Qian’s position). The tiger’s tail is real — misstep in a hierarchical situation and you get bitten. But the tiger does not bite the one who treads correctly. What is correct treading? Discriminating between high and low without resentment. Understanding your position without being defined by it. Speaking truth with deference. In career: when you must present to senior leadership, do not grovel and do not challenge. Reflect their concerns (the lake mirrors the sky) while maintaining your clarity. In family dynamics: navigating in-law relationships requires this precise balance.
