Lake over Earth. Lake (Dui, joy, openness, water) rests upon Earth (Kun, the receptive, the masses). Water naturally gathers in low places — this is congregation, not compulsion. People gather when there is a natural depression (a need, a purpose, a shared experience) that draws them. The king ‘approaches his temple’ — gathering requires sacred space and shared purpose. The superior man ‘renews his weapons’ — collective strength requires preparation for external threats.
Modern Application
Cui addresses community building: the conference that draws your industry, the movement that mobilizes around a cause, the team that coalesces for a mission. The practical insight: you cannot force gathering. You can only create conditions (the depression, the temple, the shared purpose) and let people come. Modern application: community management.
