Symbolism Deep Dive
Double Water. Water upon water — the abyss deepened, danger compounded. Kan is one of the eight doubled trigrams and the most dangerous of them all. Water represents the unknown, the depths, what cannot be seen. But water also teaches: it flows around obstacles, it fills the lowest place, it wears down the hardest rock. The key to surviving Kan is sincerity (孚, fú) — inner truth that does not depend on external conditions. When the external world is dangerous, the internal world must be solid.
Modern Application
Kan describes periods of genuine peril: financial crisis, serious illness, political persecution, deep depression. The temptation is to thrash, to panic, to grasp at any apparent escape. The hexagram counsels the opposite: flow like water. Water does not fight the rock; it goes around it. Water does not fear the depth; it fills it. Modern application: in crisis, maintain your practices (meditation, exercise, honest conversation). These are the ’lasting virtue’ that carries you through when everything else is uncertain. Sincerity — being real about your situation — is the first survival tool.
