Hexagram 20: Contemplation

Overview

Contemplation — 风地观 (Guan) — observation.

The Hexagram

  • Upper Trigram: Xun Wind
  • Lower Trigram: Kun Earth
  • Chinese Name: 风地观 (Guan)
  • English Name: Contemplation
  • Key Meanings: Observation. Wind over earth — the tower view, seeing the whole pattern.

The Judgment (Guà Cí)

Contemplation. The ablution has been made, but not yet the offering. Full of trust they look up to him.

The Image (Xiàng Cí)

The wind blows over the earth: the image of Contemplation. Thus the kings of old contemplated the regions of the world.

Symbolism Deep Dive

Wind over Earth. Wind (Xun, penetration, influence) above; Earth (Kun, the receptive, all-encompassing) below. The wind sweeps across the entire earth — nothing is hidden from its view. This is the perspective of contemplation: not close analysis but broad observation. The Image references the ancient kings who toured their kingdoms — not to intervene but to see. The ritual context is precise: the purification has been done, but the offering has not yet been made. Guan is the pause between preparation and action.

Modern Application

In an age of constant doing, Guan is the counter-cultural hexagram. It demands: stop. Observe. Do not intervene yet. The manager who walks the floor without giving instructions. The therapist who holds silence. The strategist who studies the battlefield before issuing orders. The practical discipline: before every major decision, take a ‘wind over earth’ view. Look at the whole system, not just your corner of it. The ablution (preparation) must precede the offering (action). Skipping the pause produces shallow action.
