Symbolism Deep Dive
Water over Heaven. Water (Kan, danger) above, Heaven (Qian, creative strength) below. The creative force is ready — but the danger is not yet navigable. Clouds gather but rain has not fallen. The response is not anxiety but confident waiting: ’eats and drinks, is joyous and of good cheer.’ This is not passive resignation. It is the patience of the farmer who has planted and now waits for rain, trusting the cycle.
Modern Application
Patience is the most underrated business skill. Xu describes waiting with purpose: the negotiation that cannot be rushed, the job search during a hiring freeze, the creative block that resolves not through force but through rest. The hexagram’s practical counsel: during waiting periods, maintain your well-being. Eating and drinking joyfully is not escapism — it is sustaining yourself for the moment when action becomes possible. ‘Crossing the great water’ (major undertaking) will be possible, but not yet.
