Hexagram 53: Development

Overview

Development — 风山渐 (Jian) — gradual progress.

The Hexagram

  • Upper Trigram: Xun Wind
  • Lower Trigram: Gen Mountain
  • Chinese Name: 风山渐 (Jian)
  • English Name: Development
  • Key Meanings: Gradual progress. Wind over mountain — the wild goose flies, step by patient step.

The Judgment (Guà Cí)

Development. The maiden is given in marriage. Good fortune. Perseverance furthers.

The Image (Xiàng Cí)

On the mountain, a tree: the image of Development. Thus the superior man abides in dignity and virtue, in order to improve the mores.

Symbolism Deep Dive

Wind over Mountain. Wind (Xun, gentle penetration, growth) moves over Mountain (Gen, stillness, the established). The image is a tree growing on a mountainside — slow, steady, shaped by terrain but never stopping. The wild goose is the hexagram’s animal — its migration is not fast but it covers vast distances through patient, rhythmic flight. The maiden ‘given in marriage’ represents the hexagram’s pace: a process with its own ceremonial timing that cannot be accelerated without damage.

Modern Application

Jian is the hexagram of long-term development — the career built over decades, the skill mastered through years, the relationship that deepens through seasons. Modern culture valorizes speed: quick wins, fast growth, overnight transformation. Jian offers a different truth: the wild goose reaches its destination not through speed but through persistence. Practical application: identify the long arcs in your life. What are you developing that requires years? Do not measure it by quarterly results. The tree on the mountain grows at its own pace. The tree that is forced grows weak.
