Symbolism Deep Dive
Water on Earth. Water (Kan) naturally flows to join water; it seeks its own level. Earth (Kun) receives all things without discrimination. Their combination is the most natural form of community — not imposed from above, but arising from mutual affinity. The hexagram’s warning is subtle: inquire again whether you truly possess the virtues needed for genuine belonging. Surface conformity without inner integrity is not ‘holding together’ — it is herd behavior.
Modern Application
Belonging is a fundamental human need, and Bi addresses it directly. The hexagram raises uncomfortable questions: does your community reflect your values, or are you conforming to belong? Are your professional affiliations chosen consciously? The modern application extends to company culture (hiring for cultural fit versus cultural contribution), friendship groups, and even social media tribes.
