Introduction to I Ching: The Book of Changes

Welcome to the I Ching

The I Ching (易经, Yì Jīng), or Book of Changes, is China’s oldest classic text and one of humanity’s most enduring systems of wisdom. Dating back over 3,000 years to the Western Zhou dynasty (1046–771 BCE), it was elevated to the status of a Confucian classic and has influenced Eastern philosophy, statecraft, art, and science for millennia.

What It Is — and What It Is Not

The I Ching is often misunderstood in the West. It is not fortune-telling in the carnival sense. It does not predict lottery numbers or tell you whom to marry. What it offers is something more subtle and, ultimately, more useful: a structured vocabulary for recognizing the patterns of change.

The book consists of 64 hexagrams — six-line figures composed of broken (yin) and solid (yang) lines. Each hexagram represents a situation or archetypal moment in the flow of events. Each comes with a Judgment (a summary of the situation’s meaning), an Image (a natural metaphor), and six line statements (specific guidance for different stages of the situation).

How It Works

When you consult the I Ching, you generate a hexagram — traditionally by tossing three coins six times. The resulting pattern of lines points to one of the 64 hexagrams. That hexagram describes the pattern you are currently in. The I Ching’s response is not “what will happen” but “what is the nature of this moment, and how does a wise person navigate it?”

Why It Matters Now

In an age of algorithmic decision-making, the I Ching offers something no algorithm can: a 3,000-year accumulation of human experience, encoded in a system simple enough to hold in your mind and deep enough to spend a lifetime studying. It does not replace critical thinking — it enriches it. It does not eliminate uncertainty — it helps you see the structure of the uncertainty you face.

This site is your guide to the complete I Ching system — all 64 hexagrams, the underlying philosophy of yin and yang, and practical methods for applying this ancient wisdom to modern life.
