Overview
Conflict — 天水讼 (Song) — dispute.
The Hexagram
- Upper Trigram: Qian Heaven
- Lower Trigram: Kan Water
- Chinese Name: 天水讼 (Song)
- English Name: Conflict
- Key Meanings: Dispute. Heaven moves up, water flows down — opposing forces, litigation.
The Judgment (Guà Cí)
Conflict. You are sincere and are being obstructed. A cautious halt halfway brings good fortune. Going through to the end brings misfortune.
The Image (Xiàng Cí)
Heaven and water go their opposite ways: the image of Conflict. Thus in all his transactions the superior man carefully considers the beginning.
Symbolism Deep Dive
Heaven over Water. Heaven (Qian) naturally rises; Water (Kan) naturally sinks. Their fundamental movement is apart, not together. This is the structural basis of conflict — not necessarily malice, but incompatible directions. The hexagram’s advice is specific: halt halfway. Find a mediator. Going ’through to the end’ (full litigation) consumes resources disproportionate to any gain. The superior person examines the beginning — most conflicts could have been avoided by clearer initial agreements.
Modern Application
Every dispute — legal, corporate, personal — follows the Song pattern. Two parties with opposing interests, each certain of their rightness. The I Ching’s advice is ruthlessly practical: stop before the costs exceed any possible benefit. A settlement at 50% is better than a ‘victory’ at 200% cost. In modern terms: mediation over litigation, compromise over principle for principle’s sake, and in personal conflicts, the wisdom of letting go.
