The Hexagram

  • Upper Trigram: Kan Water
  • Lower Trigram: Li Fire
  • Chinese Name: 水火既济 (Ji Ji)
  • English Name: After Completion
  • Key Meanings: Already done. Water over fire — the perfect moment that contains its own decay.

The Judgment (Guà Cí)

After Completion. Success in small matters. Perseverance furthers. At the beginning good fortune, at the end disorder.

The Image (Xiàng Cí)

Water over fire: the image of the condition in After Completion. Thus the superior man takes thought of misfortune and arms himself against it in advance.

Symbolism Deep Dive

Water over Fire. Water (Kan, danger, the deep) stands over Fire (Li, clarity, transformation) — the water will boil, the fire will be extinguished. They are in perfect interaction now, but their interaction contains the seed of its own completion. This is Ji Ji, the hexagram of ‘after completion’ — the project shipped, the goal achieved, the marriage consummated. And the I Ching, characteristically, warns: ‘At the beginning good fortune, at the end disorder.’ Completion is the most dangerous moment because it invites complacency. The superior man ’takes thought of misfortune and arms against it in advance’ — begin preparing for the next challenge before the current one is even fully complete.

Modern Application

Ji Ji describes the achievement moment — and the I Ching’s warning about it. The modern world celebrates completion: the product launch, the graduation, the IPO. But Ji Ji notes that completion is always temporary. The water boils and extinguishes the fire. The perfect system contains the dynamics of its own decay. Practical application: after any major achievement, immediately begin preparing for what comes next. Do not rest on the laurel. ‘Success in small matters’ — the completed project can be maintained, improved, iterated. But ‘at the end disorder’ — if you assume completion is permanent, it unravels. Ji Ji is the penultimate hexagram for a reason: completion is not the end.
