Overview
Before Completion — 火水未济 (Wei Ji) — not yet.
The Hexagram
- Upper Trigram: Li Fire
- Lower Trigram: Kan Water
- Chinese Name: 火水未济 (Wei Ji)
- English Name: Before Completion
- Key Meanings: Not yet. Fire over water — the endless cycle, hope in incompleteness, the journey continues.
The Judgment (Guà Cí)
Before Completion. Success. But if the little fox, after nearly completing the crossing, gets his tail in the water, there is nothing that would further.
The Image (Xiàng Cí)
Fire over water: the image of the condition before transition. Thus the superior man is careful in the differentiation of things.
Symbolism Deep Dive
Fire over Water. Fire (Li, clarity, rising) above; Water (Kan, danger, sinking) below. Fire and water do not interact — the fire burns upward, the water sinks downward. This is Wei Ji, ‘before completion’ — the state of being unfinished, the final hexagram of the I Ching. The placement is deliberate: after 63 hexagrams of wisdom, the book ends not with completion but with incompletion. The ’little fox’ nearly crosses the stream but gets its tail wet at the last moment. The journey is endless. The superior man is ‘careful in the differentiation of things’ — when completion is not yet here, careful discernment is the primary virtue.
Modern Application
Wei Ji is the I Ching’s final teaching: life is always ‘before completion.’ There is no final state. The project that seemed done reveals new dimensions. The wisdom that seemed complete meets new challenges. This is not pessimism; it is liberation. If nothing is ever truly finished, there is always room for growth, always another hexagram to move into (back to Hexagram 1, Qian, the Creative). Modern application: embrace the unfinished. The career is never ‘done.’ The relationship is never ‘complete.’ The self is never ‘fully developed.’ The little fox getting its tail wet is not failure — it is the nature of crossing. You dry off and keep going.
