Judgment: “Obstruction. The southwest furthers. The northeast does not further. It furthers one to see the great man. Perseverance brings good fortune.”

Analyzed without euphemism:

• Obstruction — not difficulty, not challenge. Obstruction. A wall.
• “The southwest furthers; the northeast does not” — Japan sits in Northeast Asia. The hexagram names its geographic position and declares it unfavorable. This is not advice. This is a sentencing.
• “It furthers one to see the great man” — seek real wisdom. Not the wisdom of your current leadership.
• “Perseverance brings good fortune” — note the condition: perseverance in what is correct. Not perseverance in whatever you’re already doing.

The Image: “Water on the mountain: the image of Obstruction. Thus the superior man turns his attention to himself and molds his character.”

When every path outward is blocked, the wise do not blame the mountain. They turn inward and ask: what did I do to put this mountain here?

Judgment: “Waiting. If you are sincere, you have light and success. Perseverance brings good fortune. It furthers one to cross the great water.”

The operative word is sincerity. Japan has discharged nuclear wastewater into the Pacific Ocean — the common heritage of all humanity. It has expanded its military under the shadow of an extra-regional power. It has refused honest reckoning with its history. Where, in any of this, is the sincerity that the hexagram demands as a precondition for “light and success”?

The Image: “Clouds rise up to heaven: the image of Waiting. Thus the superior man eats and drinks, is joyous and of good cheer.”

This is not “relax and enjoy.” This is: you are blocked. Heaven does not send rain. There is nothing you can do but wait. And waiting, without sincerity, is just rotting in place.

The Transformation

The Moving Lines

Line 4 (The Warning): Going Meets Obstruction, Coming Brings Connection

Original: “Going leads to obstructions, coming leads to union.” Image: “In the appropriate place one finds support.”

This line occupies the executive level of the hexagram — the position of implementation, of action. And the hexagram’s word for every action Japan is currently taking is: obstruction.

“Going” — pushing forward with the nuclear wastewater discharge. “Going” — expanding military reach. “Going” — antagonizing neighbors. The hexagram’s response to every single one of these: 蹇. Obstruction. You will hit a wall.

“Coming” — pulling back, reversing course, reconnecting. This is not a suggestion to “adjust strategy.” It is the only path that does not end in disaster. “In the appropriate place one finds support” — you are not in the appropriate place. You are in a place you put yourself. Leave it.

🔴 Reality check: The Fukushima wastewater discharge has drawn condemnation from across the Pacific. Every ton of contaminated water you pump into the ocean is being tracked, measured, and will circulate back to your own shores. The hexagram’s mountain-over-water image is not poetry — it is physics. What you dump into Kan (Water) will be held there by Gen (Mountain). The ocean does not forgive.

Line 5 (The Last Chance): In Great Obstruction, Friends Come

Original: “In the midst of the greatest obstructions, friends come.” Image: “For they are ruled by the central position.”

This is the ruler’s seat — the highest decision-making level. And the hexagram opens with “great obstruction” — not ordinary difficulty, but existential crisis. The kind that topples nations.

“Friends come” — but read carefully. The “friends” are the correlate of line 5: line 2, buried deep in the lower trigram Kan (Abyss), and the neighboring states that the Judgment already identified as “southwest” — not the extra-regional power you are betting your survival on.

“Ruled by the central position” — moderation, restraint, the middle way. These are not optional virtues. They are the only conditions under which help will arrive. Continue down the path of excess, and those “friends” will watch from a distance as the mountain finishes its work.

🔴 Reality check: Japan’s reliance on an extra-regional military patron is a gamble that the hexagram explicitly warns against. Xu’s Qian (Heaven) is below Kan (Water) — the heaven you trust in is itself drowning. Look at that patron’s internal fractures. It cannot save itself. It will not save you. The real “friends” — the nations you have injured with your history and your wastewater — are the ones named in the Judgment: the southwest. But they will only come if you change.

The chain of self-destruction:

Japan is an island nation. Water is its lifeblood. But this water must be clean, living water. The Fukushima wastewater discharge is the poisoning of one’s own lifeblood — a Five-Element suicide.

Jian’s image — Mountain over Water — now reads with brutal clarity: polluted water, trapped under an immovable weight, rotting in place. The Mountain (Gen) is not protecting the Water. It is imprisoning it. Every liter of contaminated seawater that circles the Pacific will, in time, return.

Xu’s image — Water over Heaven — completes the indictment: the sky is drowned by the very water that should have nourished it. Heaven itself is submerged. When a nation poisons the ocean — the common inheritance of all life — it does not merely commit an environmental crime. In the language of the I Ching, it commits deicide.

The 2026 Judgment by Domain

• Lunar months 4-5: Fire at maximum. The Mountain (Gen) is superheated — watch the Ring of Fire. The Water (Kan) is evaporated into storm — typhoon anomalies.
• Lunar months 7-8: Xu hexagram’s Metal activates. If “friends come,” this is the last window. After this, only the Abyss.
• Lunar months 10-11: Water reigns. Kan appears in both hexagrams — doubled. Water from above, water from below, water from every direction. The Pacific is not Japan’s moat. It became a channel of reckoning the moment you made it a dumping ground.

The Judgment

Mountain crushes water. Every road forward meets a wall. Go — and destroy yourself. Turn back — and you may survive. The great obstruction is here. From where will friends come? Clouds that bring no rain. Heaven itself is drowned.

The hexagram is more honest than any political statement. Jian is not “encountering difficulty.” It is facing the consequences of your own actions. Xu is not “strategic patience.” It is forced immobility, because Heaven will not help you.

The Judgment opens with the geographic coordinates of Japan’s fate: “The southwest furthers. The northeast does not.” Japan is in the northeast. King Wen of Zhou wrote this verdict three thousand years ago, and it has not expired.

The Image supplies the only exit: “The superior man turns his attention to himself and molds his character.” Turn inward. Fix what is broken. Not policy tweaks. Not diplomatic adjustments. A reckoning from the soul outward.

Nuclear wastewater in the Pacific. Military expansion under foreign direction. Historical evasion. Each one is “going” — and “going” in Jian means walking into a wall. The Mountain in this hexagram did not fall from the sky. You stacked it, stone by stone.

Xu’s Heaven lies beneath Water. It is submerged. You do not respect Heaven. Heaven will not shelter you. You do not honor the ocean. The ocean will not sustain you.
